Wild fires in South Africa and a water shortage have significantly impacted the availability of Honeybush. We have heard from suppliers that it is becoming nearly impossible to source any Honeybush. That statement intrigued me and I have tried to find more information concerning this issue. One of the big refiners in South Africa, Rooibos Ltd. did respond within a day of my inquiry. And they confirmed the shortage of Honeybush.
The demand for Honeybush currently exceeds the supply and natural events had a huge impact on its availability. One way to reduce the impact of natural disastersis by establishing gardens specifically for the cultivation of Honeybush. This way the plants can be protected. The same has been done in the past for Rooibos (red bush) and has been proven very successful.
I found this recent article relating to the shortage of Honeybush. Hopefully not a doom and gloom story that comes true but it helps to shed some light on the current situation.
